Avoiding Wrinkles

Wrinkles are likely the number one thing I get asked about daily- how to avoid getting them? We are all going to get them in the end but there are some key things you can do to keep them at bay as long as possible and avoid going under the dreaded knife.

Daily Skin Care Routine

Be faithful to your skincare routine and do it twice a day every day. It’s important, especially at night, to remove the dirt and debris that gets on your skin during the day. Pollution, dirt in the air, and free radicals attack your skin all day so it’s imperative that you remove all this stuff every day. Two to three times weekly you need to exfoliate also. A good quality scrub exfoliates while brightening to promote a clear, healthy skin tone; Skin Script has a great one for all skin types. Also, you’ll need a good anti-aging serum and moisturizer. Don’t forget and SPF to shield against UV rays. Use a minimum of SPF 15 every day on your face- all year round.

Anti-aging Products

Always look for and use products with sunscreens, peptide,s and antioxidants. Peptides help boost collagen production. antioxidants help to fight against pollutbottlesion, sun damage and all of the bad stuff attacking our skin daily. SPF 15 (at a minimum) is your best defense against aging as it protects from the sun’s rays. At About Face, we’ll help you choose what’s right for you whether your purchase our skincare line or not.

Facial Massage

You can do this daily while applying your moisturizer or cleansing in the shower.  In only a couple of minutes, you can really benefit your skin.
This is an important step in a professional facial as it helps circulation, penetrates products, tightens muscles and much more. You can really extend the life of your monthly facial by performing these movements at home. A step-by-step method is explained in a previous blog, “my home facial”.

Diet

Here-to-fore, we’ve discussed what you can do on the outside but just as important is what you are doing on the inside. Diet plays a pivotal role in your skin’s health.  Oily fish will help you obtain and maintain the proper levels of essential fats and omegas; Salmon, Tuna etc. are great for the skin. Antioxidants are paramount in skin care- things such as green leafy veggies, blueberries and mostly, any fruit or vegetable that is dark in color is good for you.

Lifestyle

Probably one of the hardest is lifestyle choices. You make your choices every day but do stop to consider how it affects your skin. Smoking really contributes to wrinkles. Not only does it cause blackheads at your temple area, it gives your mouth that old wrinkly look due to puffing your cigarette, and really makes your skin color look yellow or muddy.  Alcohol is very aging and drying to the skin. Where you hang out- pollution is again terrible for the skin. Being around smokers, street traffic and that sort of stuff really can make a bad difference for your skin.  You always hear about UV damage; don’t sit out and bake in the sun; this can cause the most skin damage than most other things your do.

As you can see it’s not one magical thing you do that helps, but it’s the whole of what you do and you have to do it daily. Then don’t forget to get a monthly facial – your skin regenerates every 28 days so you need a professional facial about every fourth week to help with this process and to ensure your home care routine is still the proper one for you. Find a good esthetician and really discuss your goal and issues. Most esthetician’s offices will sell a good skincare line and if not they can help you find one if you need one. At About Face we can discuss our lines with you or if you like what you are using we can help enhance it if you need help. We are not snobs about skin care but we want you to do what’s best for your skin. Remember the About Face motto- Your skin is a partnership between you and your esthetician.
